Self‐Sealing and Puncture Resistant Breathable Membranes for Water‐Evaporation Applications

Abstract: Breathable and waterproof membranes that self-seal damaged areas are prepared by modifying a poly(ether ester) membrane with an amphiphilic polymer co-network. The latter swells in water and the gel closes punctures. Damaged composite membranes remain water tight up to pressures of at least 1.6 bar. This material is useful for applications where water-vapor permeability, self-sealing properties, and waterproofness are desired, as demonstrated for a medical cooling device.

“…The increasing PIB content cause decrease in the swelling degree, as shown in Figure 2 and as it was expected based on the previous results with this kind of conetworks. 7,8,[20][21][22][23] The gel that had the highest volume shrinkage was the one that had the lowest PIB content since this gel composition is the closest to the homopolymer composition. Gel collapse did not occur even in this case, so only 15 wt.% PIB can inhibit the phase transition like shrinkage.…”

“…26 The methacrylate-telechelic PIB macromonomer (MA−PIB−MA) was synthesized by quasiliving carbocationic polymerization 21,26 of isobutylene. The quasiliving carbocationic initiator system was TiCl4/tert-butyldicumyl chloride, and the nucleophilic additive was 1,1,4,4-tetramethylethylenediamine.…”

“…With the integrated properties of moisture permissibility and resistance to water penetration, W&B materials are indispensable in our daily life . Significantly, electrospun W&B nanofibrous membranes exhibit simple productive process, low cost, wide material sources, and controllable structure, and have become a hot point in the development of W&B materials in the past few years and shown a large variety of practical applications in various fields .…”

“…Nevertheless, so far no self‐healing APCNs have been reported in literature. Only self‐sealing APCNs have been developed that close punctures by swelling in water . However, they did not heal damage permanently.…”
