Background: Anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder, is characterized by a distorted body image, intense fear of gaining weight, and self-imposed starvation. The aim of this study is to analyze type of information as well as its quality and reliability on YouTube about anorexia nervosa.Methodology: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 59 Youtube videos using anorexia nervosa-related keywords in June 2023. The characteristics of the YouTube videos, such as the language of the information, the time of upload, and the qualifications of the uploaders, were recorded. The content and quality of 59 videos were assessed using the Global Quality Score (GQS) and reliability grading systems.Results: The videos accumulated a total of 256,602 likes, 5,644 dislikes, and 17,761 comments. Treatmentrelated content accounted for 81.36% of the videos, while descriptions of symptoms comprised 79.66%. Doctors contributed to 18.6% of the total uploads, making them the second-largest group of uploaders after the 'Other' category. The median reliability score for doctors is 4, the same as the hospital healthcare organization. This indicates that the perceived reliability of doctors as a source of information is as high as that of hospital healthcare organizations.Conclusions: In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of critically evaluating information on anorexia nervosa videos on YouTube. Despite variations in popularity, the overall quality and reliability remained consistent. Doctors were perceived as reliable sources of information, comparable to hospital healthcare organizations. Ensuring accurate and trustworthy content is crucial for supporting those affected by anorexia nervosa and promoting reliable information to the public.

This article analyzes the mental health discourse on the most popular Russian-language channels on YouTube. The main research focus is depression representations. In total 345 videos were examined, issued since 2015 and till 2021. Using theoretical thematic analysis, the content creator types are identified, and these types are compared in terms of their portrayals of depression. The findings demonstrate that the most popular Russian-language content was made by (1) specialists on mental health, (2) influencers and celebrities, (3) documentalists, and (4) experientialists. The channels of popular science, those with TV recordings, religious, esoteric, and artistic channels were found to be watched less, despite also featuring mental health. The results regarding depression representations showed that most content creators describe depression as an illness. Additionally, the depression portrayals from the contemporary, popular Russian-language YouTube channels generally correspond with contemporary medical perspectives on depression, and the authors discussed depression using words and collocations from the medical discourse. Therefore, it could be assumed that the Russian-language representations of depression on this platform are based on the medical explanatory model of depression and are highly medicalized. The paper contributes to studies of mental health discourse reception across cultures and media, as well as the literature on depression representations.
This article presents a detailed qualitative content analysis of eating disorder and recovery videos on TikTok which show young women who proclaim to raise awareness or depict the recovery process. We pay particular attention to aspects of form and content and TikTok's affordances in relation to them. We argue that allegedly showing what an eating disorder and recovery are ‘really like’ is in tension with an aestheticisation of the female body and eating disorders that is present in the videos. While TikTok has been described by scholars as a memetic and viral platform, this aestheticisation points to a tension of authentic self-expression, complexities around body image and memetic visibility. We conclude that the platform is characterised by repetition and imitation, but those aspects are secondary as they relate to struggles linked to eating disorders themselves and their representation rather than primary virality or the memetic.
