“…Other studies also demonstrate the infrequency of mental health-related CAM service use relative to overall CAM service use. The relatively high rates of mental health-related CAM product use among older adults in our sample are to be expected given high rates of CAM product use for all purposes among older adults, estimated at 27.4% in an American sample of adults 75 years and older (Nahin et al, 2006), 19.1% in a Swedish sample of adults aged 60 years and older (Sjernberg et al, 2006), and 51% in an Ontario sample of adults aged 60 and older (Levine, 2009). Logistic regression analyses for predictors of use of conventional psychoactive medications commonly used for depression and anxiety and alternative products used for mental health health conditions in a nationally representative American survey, 9.8% reported a formal, paid visit to a CAM provider in the last year and only 4.5% reported such a visit specifically to treat their mental health condition (Druss and Rosenheck, 2000).…”

“…The Adverse Event Reporting System database maintained by the Food and Drug Administration noted 580, 904 adverse event reports for drugs and therapeutic biologic products in 2009, more than double the number of such reports in 2001 and 10% more than in 2008 1 . The increasing use of pharmacologic therapy along with over‐the‐counter (OTC) medications and herbal supplements 2,3 may expose patients to the risk of potential drug–drug interactions (DDIs) when more than one drug is metabolized via the cytochrome (CYP) 450 enzyme system. A drug–drug exposure (DDE) occurs when multiple CYP450‐metabolized agents are taken concurrently, but the relationship between DDE and DDI remains to be elucidated, in that not all patients exposed to multiple CYP450‐metabolized drugs will experience a DDI.…”
