Self-reported Sleep Impairment in Functional Dyspepsia and Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Abstract: Background/AimsSleep impairment is a common complaint among patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia (FD). “…The few studies conducted in functional dyspepsia (FD) patients with sleep disturbances have reported inconsistent results. It has been reported that the prevalence of sleep disturbances is slightly higher in patients with FD than in healthy controls 8–12 ; moreover, sleep disturbances in patients with FD were more common in the presence of heartburn or regurgitation 13 . However, other studies reported that sleep disorders were not associated with FD 7,14,15 .…”

“…It is well known that many patients with functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders have sleep disturbance [ 1 3 ]. Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a functional GI disease that is also frequently comorbid with sleep disturbance [ 4 , 5 ]. However, most studies have just pointed out an association between GI symptoms and sleep disturbance, and only a few studies have focused on how GI symptoms change by improvement of sleep disturbance.…”
