Self‐Reported Sexual Function and Sexual Arousability in Women with Epilepsy

Abstract: In contrast to subjects of previous research, the women in our study did not have a disorder of sexual desire, but more than one third experienced disorders of sexual arousal, implying a physiological deficit. Although the etiology for these arousal phase dysfunctions has not been defined, such conditions are treatable and warrant referral to a gynecologist versed in the treatment of sexual disorders.

“…Although women and men with epilepsy may often experience disorders of sexual desire, disorders of sexual arousal are at least as common. One-third to one-half of men with epilepsy experience erectile difficulties (52,53), and female outpatients with epilepsy describe a high frequency of dyspareunia, vaginismus, and lack of vaginal lubrication, with normal sexual desire and experience (54). Physiological sexual dysfunction is further suggested by studies showing abnormalities in penile tumescence and rigidity (55,56) and reduced genital blood flow response with sexual arousal (57).…”
