Self‐reported questionnaire for surveillance of periodontitis in Chinese patients from a prosthodontic clinic: a validation study

Abstract: Questionnaires may be an efficient approach to monitor periodontal health in China. Dietrich's models, with age, smoking and self-reported mobility as predictors, can be used to monitor periodontal health for Chinese prosthodontic patients.

“…Dietrich et al. () introduced in 2007 a prediction rule for periodontitis based on age, smoking, and self‐report tooth mobility, which was successively validated in other more recent studies (Dietrich et al., ; Wu et al., ; Zhan et al., ). However, this score was developed against a periodontal diagnosis based on alveolar bone loss evaluation on panoramic radiograph, which cannot be considered a gold standard diagnosis.…”

“…The French questionnaire was developed by an expert committee (composed by MCC, PhB, and two other specialists in periodontology) starting from the previously validated CDC/AAP 8‐item self‐reported measure (Eke et al., ; Slade, ). Four additional items were selected from other questionnaires previously published for screening and surveillance of periodontal diseases (Gilbert & Litaker, ; Khader et al., ; Wu et al., ). Thus, 12 items constitute the French questionnaire (Table ).…”

“…For the pilot intervention part of the study, a subgroup consisting of the first 24 participants with survey responses suggestive of POD [19-21] (i.e. one or more affirmative answers to receipt of deep cleaning, loose teeth, tooth sensitivity, and/or gum bleeding) will be assigned to two groups (group 1 will contain the odd-numbered patients, and group 2 the even-numbered) according to their sequence of enrollment ( Figure 1 ).…”

“…Currently, examiner‐based protocols ranging from full‐mouth examination with recording of continuous measures (i.e., probing depth and attachment levels) on six sites per tooth to categoric indices for periodontal disease screening (e.g., Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs [CPITN]) are used for population‐level screening for periodontitis 12 . In an attempt to introduce examiner‐independent periodontitis screening methods, researchers have proposed self‐reported periodontal measures (SRPMs) to predict periodontitis when exam‐based assessment is unattainable or impractical 8,13‐25 . Compared with other indices for periodontal screening, predictive SRPMs can be a more time‐ and resource‐effective alternative 25 .…”
