Self-report screening measures for depression in chronic pain patients

Abstract: Depression is prevalent among chronic pain patients, yet little is known about the ability of various self‐report measures to detect this disorder in this population. This study investigated the relationship of several self‐report depression scales (Beck Depression Inventory‐standard and short forms, MMPI Depression, Depression subtle, and Depression obvious scales, and the Zung Self‐Rating Depression Scale) to clinician DSM‐III diagnoses of major depressive disorder in 40 chronic pain patients. Thirty percent… Show more

“…6,28,52,53,61 The BDI has been shown to be a reliable and valid measure of depression in individuals with pain, 26 and has been commonly used in studies using samples of patients with back and/or neck pain. 8,18,24,62 Pain Catastrophizing The Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) was used to measure participants' levels of pain catastrophizing. The PCS consists of 13 self-report items, with total scores ranging from 0 to 52, higher scores indicating more severe catastrophizing.…”

“…Depressive symptoms were assessed with the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II; (Beck, Steer, & Brown, 1996), which has shown good reliability and validity previously, and in chronic pain populations (e.g., Turner & Romano, 1984). Prior chronic pain research has established strong associations among pain intensity, disability, partner responses, and depression (Cano et al, 2000Kerns et al, 1990).…”

“…One possible criticism of the Beck Inventory is that, when used with chronic pain patients, it may not correlate with a clinical diagnosis of depression. Two recent studies (France, Houpt, Scott, Varia, & Wallman, 1984;Turner & Romano, 1984) have evaluated the degree to which scores on the Beck Inventory relate to the diagnosis of depression in pain patients. These studies used DSM-111 or Research Diagnostic Criteria to diagnose depression.…”
