Self-referrals to a doctors' mental health service over 10 years

Abstract: Increasing numbers of doctors sought help from the doctors' mental health support service. More than half scored above the thresholds for burnout and psychological distress and these proportions were consistent over 10 years. Doctors may be more willing to seek help than a decade ago. Further research is needed to confirm the underlying reasons for this. More resource is needed to meet the increase in demand.

“…This omission follows trends within physician-related research where discussions of mental health concerns have often been lacking despite evidence that these are important determinants of physician well-being [43]. Also, in contrast to many studies on retirement among non-physician populations which have focused on spousal retirement or couples' adjustment to retirement [44][45][46], only one study focused on the impact of a physician's spouse on retirement adjustment [25].…”

“…Poor mental health is associated with increased alcohol consumption, irritability with patients and colleagues and self-reported reduced standards of care 19. Although concern exists about doctors’ accessing mental health services,21 recent research shows an increase in doctors’ rates of self-referral 20. It is thought that, following mental illness, doctors are significantly less likely to return to full-time employment 22.…”
