Self-Rated Health and Mortality: Short- and Long-Term Associations in the Whitehall II Study

Abstract: SRH predicts mortality equally well in men and women. However, the covariates explained a much larger proportion of the SRH-mortality relationship in men compared with women. In this middle-aged cohort, SRH predicts mortality strongly in the short term but only weakly in the long term.

“…SRH was generally poorer in females than in males, as was reported earlier (Halford et al 2012;McCullough and Laurenceau 2004;Singh-Manoux et al 2007). Furthermore, we found improved SRH over time in individuals aged ≥48 years, but stable or poorer SRH in younger individuals.…”

“…Self-rated health (SRH) based on a single question asking people to rate their overall health status has been shown to be a reliable measure of individuals' subjective health, and is associated with both morbidity and mortality (DeSalvo et al 2006;Idler and Benyamini 1997;Kaplan et al 1996;Nielsen et al 2008;Singh-Manoux et al 2007). The mechanisms behind this association are not fully known.…”

“…First, the association between self-perceived health and mortality has been well established (McGee et al 1999;Singh-Manoux et al 2007). Second, it is simple and easy to include question about overall health in both health-specific surveys such as the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) and the European Health Survey, and in more general surveys such as the European Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC-SILC) and the European Social Survey (ESS).…”

“…Self-rated health has in some studies also been found to be a better predictor of disability retirement Karpansalo et al, 2004;Pietiläinen et al, 2011), whereas the social security system uses diagnosed disease. In addition, some studies have found self-rated health to be a better predictor of mortality than diagnosed disease (Idler & Benyamini, 1997;Mossey & Shapir, 1982;Singh-Manoux et al, 2007;Strawbridge & Wallhagen, 1999). Regarding its complexity, the association between diagnosed and self-rated health in relation to retirement has been found to need further study Singh-Manoux et al, 2007).…”
