Self‐Powered Vehicle Emission Testing System Based on Coupling of Triboelectric and Chemoresistive Effects

Abstract: Traditional triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-based self-powered chemicalsensing systems are demonstrated by measuring the triboelectric effect of the sensing materials altered by the external stimulus. However, the limitations of triboelectric sensing materials and instable outputs caused by ambient environment significantly restrict their practical applications. In this work, a stable and reliable self-powered chemical-sensing system is proposed by coupling triboelectric effect and chemoresistive effect. Th… Show more

“…A self-powered chemical sensing system has been built by connecting a resistance-type gas (NO 2 ) sensor with a contactseparate mode triboelectric harvester in series and an LED in parallel (Shen et al, 2018). The system worked as a vehicle exhaust detector, where the triboelectric harvester was driven by the motor vehicle exhaust flow, thus powering the gas sensor and giving an alarm via the LED.…”

“…Many transduction mechanisms for energy harvesting have already been developed, and many designs of harvesting devices have been provided for a wide range of applications from small-to large-scale powering [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. A few years ago, the interest of researchers was attracted by the triboelectric effect, by which electricity is produced due to mechanical friction between two bodies in a motion [8,9]. This triboelectric effect has been known for a long time and is thought to be purely electrostatic in binary systems [10,11].…”

“…Hence, action is urgently needed to seek effective technologies to remove airborne PMs or other pollutants. TENG has been successfully developed to realize efficient air filtering [110,172,[175][176][177] and vehicle emission treatment [173,178]. In fact, TENG-based air purification products are already available in the market [174].…”
