Self‐Organized Gradient Hole Injection to Improve the Performance of Polymer Electroluminescent Devices

Abstract: A new approach to forming a gradient hole‐injection layer in polymer light‐emitting diodes (PLEDs) is demonstrated. Single spin‐coating of hole‐injecting conducting polymer compositions with a perfluorinated ionomer results in a work function gradient through the layer formed by self‐organization, which leads to remarkably efficient single‐layer PLEDs (ca. 21 cd A–1). The device lifetime is significantly improved (ca. 50 times) compared with the conventional hole‐injection layer, poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophen… Show more

“…[ 6 ] The anionic polyelectrolyte Nafi on, which is also an acid, is found to give the opposite effect compared to cationic polyelectrolytes. A thin fi lm of Nafi on on ITO is found to increase the work function by 0.5 eV, [21][22][23] which indicates that Nafi on can modify the metal work function. Another anionic polyelectrolyte is poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid) (H-PSS), a component of PEDOT:PSS formulations.…”

“…PFI has been shown to be successful at creating high F HTLs for blue organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). [21][22][23] Like low band-gap polymers, blue emitting polymers oen have a large IP. As an example, for poly(9,9-dioctyluorene) IP ¼ 5.9 eV.…”

“…For small organic molecules, graded structures can be fabricated by codeposition processes [4][5][6][7] and annealing [8], but for polymers it is difficult to control the gradient profile in the active layer due to dissolution by the solvent. There have been attempts to achieve polymer graded structures, such as molecular-scale interface engineering [9], self-organization [10], and thermal transfer process [11]; however, the processes involved are not simple. We have developed a vacuum spray (VS) method [12][13][14][15][16] …”
