Self-mixing thin-slice solid-state laser Doppler velocimetry with much less than one feedback photon per Doppler cycle

Abstract: The drastic shortening of a photon lifetime as compared with normal TEM00 operations has been shown to be associated with the formation of annular mode operations in a thin-slice Nd:GdVO4 laser with tilted laser diode end pumping. The 15 dB enhancement of the signal-to-noise ratio, owing to the shortened photon lifetime, has been demonstrated in the self-mixing laser Doppler velocimetry experiment in comparison with the TEM00 operations, where the minimum intensity feedback rate from a target to the laser for … Show more

“…The wavelength stability is 2×10 -8 /h and the power stability is 0.1%/2h [32]. Owing to the extremely short photon lifetime compared to the fluorescence lifetime of Nd:YVO4 crystal, the optical rotary sensor using a solid-state microchip laser has a ultrahigh detecting sensitivity (or signal to noise radio, SNR) [33]. Therefore, the proposed ORS can measure different targets with low reflectivity.…”

“…The laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) is a well-known equipment used to measure motions, fluid, and airflow [1][2][3][4][5][6]. By illuminating the flow or object with a laser and measuring the scattering caused by movement, it is possible to calculate its speed [7,8]. LDV is capable of providing high spatial resolution and high response speed and is characterized by non-contact measurement.…”
