Self-Lubrication of Cl-Implanted Titanium Nitride Coating for Dry Metal Forming

Abstract: Various kinds of lubricants are utilized in every aspect of manufacturing for mass production. To prolong the life time of tools or dies, much amount of lubricants must be used for mechanical machining or metal forming, resulting in massive emission of wasted lubricants. Dematerialization in the environmentally benign manufacturing requires less use and less emission of lubricants as possible to significantly reduce the environmental burden. For that purpose, dry machining or dry metal forming becomes a challe… Show more

“…Titanium nitride (TiN) is mechanically and chemically stable and has been applied to tools and machine components (such as automotive parts) [1][2][3] to modify their surface properties. Usually, TiN surface layers are produced on titanium materials by a nitriding process using owing pure nitrogen gas [3][4][5][6] or ion nitridization 6) .…”

“…As had been partially discussed in Refs. [29][30][31], the Climplanted TiN indicates softer response than the original TiN films and this softness is enhanced with increasing the Cl dose. This softening via Cl-implantation to TiN is completely opposite to the conventional hardening effect via the physical modification.…”

“…Moreover, TiN coating has a high friction coefficient under dry condition, and its corrosion resistance is not enough, either. [8][9][10] Consequently, development of novel coating material which provides high wear and corrosion resistance to Ti-6Al-4V has been intensely desired.…”
