Self-Lubricating Materials for Extreme Condition Applications

Abstract: Lubrication for extreme conditions, such as high temperature, cryogenic temperature, vacuum pressure, high load, high speed, and corrosive environments, is a continuing challenge among tribologists and space engineers due to the inadequate friction and wear properties of liquid lubricants. As a result, tremendous research effort has been put forward to study lubrication mechanisms for various machine elements under challenging conditions over the past two decades. Self-lubricating materials have been most wide… Show more

“…Adaptive processes are designed to achieve low-meltingpoint and easy-to-shear binary and ternary compounds considering some parameters such as, melting of soft metals or temperature-activated diffusion, interfacial tribo-reaction or environmental-assisted oxidation. (5) The tribological surfaces for reversible temperature, humidity, load, or vacuum are necessary for wide-range solid lubrication through a number of heat cycles. Micro-laminate structures are utilised to create temperature-adaptive composites or coatings with lubrication that limits tribo-reaction, melting, oxidation, or diffusion across a number of heat cycles.…”

“…During forming at high temperatures, the proper lubrication is required for decreasing the friction stresses, and avoiding seizures and galling. Tool wear occurs during high-speed dry machining due to abrasive, chemical, adhesive, and electrochemical wear [4,5,15]. Pantograph contact strips [4] deteriorate from arc discharge attack-induced adhesion and high-temperature mechanical impact.…”

“…Reducing wear loss and strengthen the lubricating between the mechanical moving parts are the important ways to achieve the energy saving and material loss, and therefore wear-resistant materials, as an essential component in the operation of equipment, have increasingly high requirements for their frictional properties (Lin et al, 2011;Kuang et al, 2022). The use of lubricating oil or the self-lubricating structural parts is a common method to reduce friction and anti-wear (Maruyama et al, 2017;John and Menezes, 2021). However, liquid lubricating materials are susceptible to environmental factors and lose their lubricating effects in the harsh scenarios such as high vacuum, high load and extreme high or low temperature environments (Kian et al, 2019).…”

“…One of these effects is providing a lower coefficient of friction and lower wear [19,20]. One of the important attributes for superior lubrication properties of solid nanoparticles is their potential to shear between the interacting surfaces as well as due to their inherent layered structures [21]. The incorporation of inorganic solid nanoparticles such as nano clays has been exploited for the fabrication of Pickering emulsions.…”
