Self‐Injurious Behavior ( SIB )

Abstract: Self‐injurious behavior (SIB) occurs in both human and nonhuman primates. Only a small percentage of monkeys develop this syndrome, which is manifested primarily as bites directed to the limbs. Monkeys with SIB show a dysregulation (blunting) of the stress response system and altered beta‐endorphin levels, and are genetically different than controls.
