“…Interestingly, as most authors, we found a higher TBSA involved, a higher mortality, and higher rates of [ previous psychiatric disease and substance abuse in the SIB group compared with the general population in the Burn Unit [10,17]. This lends consistency to the notion that SIB patients' demographic and clinical features are remarkably consistent in Western European and North American countries [9,12,31]. As far as the authors know, this was the first time, since its conception, that the SIB-Typology Tool was used systematically for evaluating SIB patients [9].…”

“…Reviewing the literature on SIB, we find that our results do not generally differ from what has generally been reported [9,10,12,30,31]. “…Unemployment is described in 25 to 80% of cases, and is sometimes associated with a lower level of education [9,18,23,32,[39][40][41]]. This appears to be more common with male victims.…”

“…The use of such products is frequently described in the literature, in 30 to 77% of the victims [8,13,19,26,[28][29][30]32,33,35,39,55,56]. According to Wiechman et al, inflammable product use is linked to suicide and lethal intentionality, compared to self-harming behavior where cigarette and matches are used more commonly instead [49].…”

“…When compared to incidental burn cases, victims of self-inflicted burns were shown to have wider and deeper burn wounds, longer duration of hospital stay, as well as higher mortality rates. 15 Complications like multiple organ dysfunction, growth of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains, and increased need for antibiotics have been reported. The mortality rate for self-inflicted burn patients (55%) was higher than accidental flame burns (24%) and total burns (10%) hospitalized in our series.…”
