Self-Help Training System for Nursing Students to Learn Patient Transfer Skills

Abstract: This paper describes the construction and evaluation of a self-help skill training system for assisting student nurses in learning skills involving the transfer of patients from beds to wheelchairs. We have proposed a feedback method that is based on a checklist and video demonstrations. To help trainees efficiently check their performance and correct errors, the checklist was prepared with items specific to the performance of tasks related to individual body parts (e.g., the height of the waist). In this syst… Show more

“…Despite these studies proposing different methods to evaluate the learners’ performance, the effects of the sensor on the learner and environment are inevitable. For instance, the color marker [ 12 ] and motion capture marker [ 14 ] need to be attached to the trainee’s body, and the inertial sensors must be set on the player’s golf club [ 16 , 17 ]. Further, the motion capture camera and Kinect sensor employed in our early work required time consuming calibration and installation [ 12 , 13 , 14 ].…”

“…A method to assess trainee behavior related to clinical teamwork was introduced in [16]. Additionally, in a previous study, we proposed a transfer skills evaluation system that uses a Kinect camera and color markers attached to patients and students [17]. Evaluation systems for nursing skills require that a patient receive care from a nursing trainee during the evaluation.…”

“…By bridging the 56 gap between theory and practice, SBL excels in providing an ample substitution for 57 direct patient care in a safe learning environment (DeCelle, 2015). Through its use of experiential learning and deliberate practice, SBL allows the learners to apply theoretical concepts, develop teamworking skills, experiment and safely make mistakes, rehearse technical procedures, and then take part in a facilitated and reflective learning process during the debriefing of an immersive scenario or to receive constructive feedback from instructors on a skills workstation (DeCelle, 2015;Huang et al, 2014;McGaghie, Issenberg, Cohen, Barsuk, & Wayne, 2011). A study on junior-level baccalaureate nursing students signified that the use of high-fidelity simulation leads to improved skills performance (DeCelle, 2015).…”
