Self-healing polymer nanocomposite materials: A review

Abstract: During the last few years, different kinds of autonomic and non-autonomic self-healing materials have been prepared using diverse techniques for a number of applications. The incorporation of suitable functionalities into these materials facilitates a healing mechanism that is triggered by damage/ rupture as well as various chemistries. This article presents a detailed study of the self-healing properties of different kinds of polymer nanocomposites utilizing a number of healing mechanisms, including the addit… Show more

“…Often inspired by nature-based materials, synthetic self-healing allows the preparation of multifunctional materials that recover their fundamental properties, including mechanical strength, conductivity, fracture toughness, and corrosion resistance, after damage infliction. Although the usefulness and practicality of these materials, when considering the field of polymer nanocomposites, self-healing has remained unexplored up to very recently, providing a broad field of opportunities to be explored [146].…”

“…The incorporation of healable characteristics in commercial polymers has been a topic of interest in the last decade, as the ability to recover the physical properties of a damaged material potentially permits the development of smart applications that make materials safer, more reliable and durable and reduce maintenance costs [1][2][3][4]. However, the incorporation of such characteristics, by means of the introduction of healing agents, can negatively affect the physical properties of the final product.…”

“…[34,88] Motivated by living organisms whose injuries can be healed spontaneously by innate regenerative systems, smart energy storage devices with self-healing ability in response to external mechanical damage are very appealing, and are being studied intensely, [34,89,90] facilitated by the rapid development of healable materials. [91][92][93][94][95][96][97] As a consequence, the service time, reliability and durability of these devices can be significantly enhanced.…”
