The corrosion process is a major source of metallic material degradation, particularly in aggressive environments, such as marine ones. Corrosion progression affects the service life of a given metallic structure, which may end in structural failure, leakage, product loss and environmental pollution linked to large financial costs. According to NACE, the annual cost of corrosion worldwide was estimated, in 2016, to be around 3%-4% of the world's gross domestic product. Therefore, the use of methodologies for corrosion mitigation are extremely important. The approaches used can be passive or active. A passive approach is preventive and may be achieved by emplacing a barrier layer, such as a coating that hinders the contact of the metallic substrate with the aggressive environment. An active approach is generally employed when the corrosion is set in. That seeks to reduce the corrosion rate when the protective barrier is already damaged and the aggressive species (i.e., corrosive agents) are in contact with the metallic substrate. In this case, this is more a remediation methodology than a preventive action, such as the use of coatings. The sol-gel synthesis process, over the past few decades, gained remarkable importance in diverse areas of application. Sol-gel allows the combination of inorganic and organic materials in a single-phase and has led to the development of organic-inorganic hybrid (OIH) coatings for several applications, including for corrosion mitigation. This manuscript succinctly reviews the fundamentals of sol-gel concepts and the parameters that influence the processing techniques. The state-of-the-art of the OIH sol-gel coatings reported in the last few years for corrosion protection, are also assessed. Lastly, a brief perspective on the limitations, standing challenges and future perspectives of the field are critically discussed.Polymers 2020, 12, 689 The development of OIH sol-gel coatings, based on siloxanes, for corrosion mitigation, has been widely studied in the last few years [2,31,[36][37][38]. Numerous studies have been conducted since the early 1990s [39,40]. The studies performed showed that siloxanes were effective in mitigating the corrosion processes of different metallic substrates. This development was mainly due to the need for alternative environmentally friend materials and processes to replace the traditional chromium-based pre-treatments. Hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) is carcinogenic and shows high environmental toxicity and its use has been forbidden since 2006. However, Cr(VI) based pre-treatments improve the coating adherence to the substrate and are effective corrosion inhibitors [41][42][43] which make its replacement challenging. Subsoiling has been widely used all over the world as an important operation method of no-tillage farming. For energy-saving and life-extension, the tillage resistance and wear-corrosion of subsoilers have attracted wide attention. In this study, the tillage resistance, soil disturbance, wear and corrosion of subsoiler with S-T-SK-2# biomimetic structures (S means subsoiler; T means tine; SK means shank; 2#, h/s=0.57, h=5 mm and α=45°.) and self-healing coating under two seasons, two locations with different soil properties (black loam and clay soil) and subsoiling speeds (2 km/h and 3.6 km/h) were investigated. The soil moisture content and compactness affected the tillage resistance and wear-corrosion. The tillage resistance and degree of corrosion on all subsoilers were much larger in clay soil than that in black loam soil. Compared with S-T-SK-2#, the tillage reduction rate of C-S-T-SK-2# (S-T-SK-2# with self-healing coating) was up to 14.32% in clay soil under the speed of 2 km/h. The significance tests of regression equation results showed that subsoiler type and soil properties had a significant impact on soil disturbance coefficient, swelling of total soil layer, bulkiness of the plough pan. It is of a guiding significance for the analysis of soil disturbance. Synergism mechanism of subsoiler coupling with biomimetic structures and self-healing coating was analyzed in following. It depicted the guiding effect of biomimetic structure and the shield function of self-healing coating, resulting in anticorrosion and wear resistance of subsoiler.

Synthesis and characterization of hybrid shell microcapsules for anti-corrosion Ni-Co coating

This paper presents the results of the study of microcapsules synthesized using a novel hybrid shell of polyureaformaldehyde/SiO2 (PUF/SiO2) and a core of linseed oil. The synthesis was accomplished by facial polymerization combined with sol-gel of TEOS, and urea-formaldehyde resin to form the hybrid shell under optimal process parameters. The microcapsules were embedded in a metal coating using the electrodeposition method. Microcapsules were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM, FE-SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), particle size analyzer (PSA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The experimental results indicated that the average size of capsules synthesized umder the optimum processing parameters were in the range of 5 µm to 200 µm with a hybrid shell thickness of less than 1 µm. The internal surface of the shell contained more SiO2 compared to the external PUF/SiO2 layer, as indicated by EDS. While the internal surfaces were smooth, the outer surface of the microcapsules were composed of rough branched-like structures of urea-formaldehyde particles. It was shown by thermal analysis that initial decomposition starts at 225℃ which proved excellent thermal stability. Electrodeposition was carried out with the current density of 25 mA∙cm-2 to embed the synthesized microcapsules into the Ni-Co alloy coating, which was investigated by SEM, and corrosion test (OCP, LP) to characterize the corrosion behavior of these potentially self-healing coatings.
