Self-Healing Magnetorheological Elastomer for Vibration Damping

Abstract: In this work, magnetorheological elastomers (MRE) based on nickel zinc ferrite and natural rubber were prepared. Self-healing capability was employed to the MRE by peroxide induced graft polymerization between zinc thiolate and natural rubber to produce reversible ionic crosslinks that can recover the properties of the fracture materials. Evidence that reversible ionic crosslinks occurred was determined by tensile test of original and healed sample. The results revealed that the tensile strength of the MRE rec… Show more

“…It was due to the increase in stiffness and hardness of the rubber blends. The peroxidic and ionic bonds in the rubber matrix inevitably produce shorter bridges between elastomeric chains in the network, thus resulting in a compound that are more rigid and stiff [16].…”

“…In order to establish close contact and pressure, the two pieces were joined and compressed together in the sample cutting holder as shown in Figure 1. They were then placed in three different temperatures and duration to achieve self-healing: 24 °C, 24 h [4, 7, 8, 15, 16]. 120 °C, 5 h [15].…”

“…The general category used by many researchers, intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms, is still applicable and broadly applied. [34][35][36] Even if there are different classifications of healing mechanisms highlighted by the material scientists, the purpose is still the same, to make the elastomer recover itself physically, chemically, thermally, and functionality when the damage is present in the material's body. It is worth mentioning that capsule-based extrinsic mechanism is not widely used in elastomers because the outer shell of capsules is poorly adhered to the rubber matrix and serves as a spot for crack initiation.…”

“…The dynamic characteristics of this boring tool have been studied to understand the effectiveness of MR damper to the system (Sam Paul et al, 2014a). Recently, the study on MRE and its ability to control vibrations is getting highly appreciable which may take vibration suppression to a next level in the future (Aung et al, 2020;Brancati et al, 2020;Fu et al, 2020;Kavlicoglu et al, 2020;Leng et al, 2020;Li et al, 2019;Praveen et al, 2020;Shuib et al, 2020).…”
