Self‐healable and thiol–ene UV‐curable waterborne polyurethane for anticorrosion coating

Abstract: Thiol-ene ultraviolet-curable waterborne polyurethane (WPU) crosslinked networks capable of self-healing of cracks were developed for anticorrosion coating application. The healing mechanism is attributed to the rearrangement of the crosslinked networks caused by triethylamine-catalyzed thiol-disulfide exchange reaction proved by high-performance liquid chromatography, gel permeation chromatography, and rheology tests. The crack remendability can be repeated for at least two times as demonstrated by visual ins… Show more

“…2 . Li et al 25 synthesized UV-curable water-based polyurethane self-healing coatings with polysulfide prepolymer as the main material through sulfhydryl-ene photopolymerization. Because of the exchange of disulfide bonds in the prepared coating, the coating not only had self-healing properties but also exhibited excellent anticorrosion performance, indicating a new direction for the development of multifunctional anticorrosion coating.…”

“…Currently, there is a huge number of environmentally friendly anticorrosive marine coating technologies under research and in the development stage, among which the most important are: (i). improved low-VOC (e.g., high-solids, solvent-free) and UV-curable coatings [99], and water-based coatings with better performance; (ii). anticorrosive coatings incorporating bio-based polymeric resins [100] and natural compounds such as green corrosion inhibitors [101,102]; (iii).…”

“…[40][41][42] In this regard, most of the attempts to develop waterborne self-healing coatings are based on polyurethanes. [43][44][45][46] The development of water-based NIPUs and NIPUreas, has gained an increasing interest in the last years because it leads to the design of more eco-friendly processes, in addition to broadening the scope of applications for NIPUs with products that can meet specific performances and market demands. The aim of this mini-review is thus to summarize this emerging field.…”
