Self-field AC losses and critical currents in multi-tube Ag - Bi-2223 conductors

Abstract: The purpose of this work was to investigate the influence of different technological treatments of silver sheathed Bi-2223 tapes on the critical current density and the AC transport losses. The tapes were produced using the 'tube-in-tube' technique, by including a silver rod in the centre of the superconducting powder during packing of the silver tube. The aim of the process is to increase the silver to superconductor surface area and thus also the alignment at the centre of the conductor ceramic core. AC tran… Show more

“…This experiment allows access to a wide frequency domain and is well suited for investigating the coupling loss. Another type of data is obtained with standard transport ac loss measurements in the self-field, as described in, e.g., [14]. Figure 2 shows a cross-sectional view of a Cu/ Ag composite sheathed tape, a typical result obtained by the first method (see Fig.…”

“…Previously, measurement of the power loss in Bi-2223 HTS tapes has focused on low frequency applications below 600 Hz [13][14][15] instead of the typical 1-2 kHz at which gradient coils work.…”

“…In this paper, we report the results of critical current measurements and AC loss simulation of a series of BSCCO tapes using the Norris equation with different twist-pitch (8,10,13,30,50, 70 mm and ∞). Experimental AC loss measurements were further performed on three selected tapes with twist pitch of 10, 13, and 70 mm.…”
