Self-Existing Objects and Auto-Generated Information in Chronology-Violating Space–times: A Philosophical Discussion

Abstract: Closed time-like curves naturally appear in a variety of chronology-violating space-times. In these space-times, the Principle of Self-Consistency demands an harmony between local and global affairs that excludes grandfather-like paradoxes. However, self-existing objects trapped in CTCs are not seemingly avoided by the standard interpretation of this principle, usually constrained to a dynamical framework. In this paper we discuss whether we are committed to accept an ontology with self-existing objects if CTC… Show more

“…For example, while the wave functions in Eqs. (17) and (18) do not satisfy the continuity condition across the wormhole, they each yield a density matrix̺ 2 given by (19) so that Eq. (20) is satisfied.…”

“…( 19) describes a mixed state with equal probabilities of 1 2 for finding a BB entering, or not entering, the wormhole at t = T. Since the subsystem at z = z 2 is in a mixed state at t = T, this subsystem, and therefore, from Eq. (17). the system as a whole, must be in a mixed state at t = 0 if there is to be continuity across the wormhole.…”

“…Aquinas states that this is a self-evident premise: "There is no case known (neither is it, indeed, possible) in which a thing is found to be the efficient cause of itself; for so it would be prior to itself, which is impossible." Romero and Torres [12] and Romero [13], have shown, however, that it is possible to deny P ′ 2 without contradiction in space-times with non-trivial topology 7 . Whether there are space-time regions with such a topology (e.g.…”

“…That is (in terms of killing grandfathers) the interesting question is 'Why is it that a child who plans, first, to build his time machine (at the age of 20), then to marry (at 30), and then to force his offspring to kill him when he is 25, will always fail? '2 Correspondingly, we deal neither with the (quantum) 'many-world' theory[14], nor with the (metanomological[15]?) 'principle of self-consistency'[10].…”
