In response to the concern of the need to improve the scientific skills of school children, this study\ud investigated the influence of text design (in terms of text cohesion) and individual differences, with\ud the aim of identifying pathways to improving science education in early secondary school (Key\ud Stage 3). One hundred and four secondary school children (56 females, 48 males), aged 12–13\ud years took part in the study. To assess the influence of local cohesion (lexical and grammatical links\ud between adjacent sentences) in science texts, we measured students’ comprehension (through multiple\ud choice questions) of science text that was high and low in local cohesion. To explore the role of\ud individual differences, students completed tests to measure general reading ability, general intelligence,\ud facets of conscientiousness, science self-concept and individual, friends and family aspirations\ud in science. Students were more accurate in answering comprehension questions after reading\ud text that was high in cohesion than low in cohesion, suggesting that high local text cohesion\ud improved students’ comprehension of science text. Reading ability predicted increased comprehension\ud for both text designs. Individual aspirations in science accounted for unique variance for comprehension\ud for high cohesion text. Implications for the teaching of secondary school science are\ud discussed

Studien zu Sozialisationswirkungen sportlicher Aktivitäten auf Facetten der Persönlichkeit (z. B. Selbstkonzept) haben sich bislang in der Regel auf die Analyse isolierter Effekte des Sports konzentriert, ohne weitere Entwicklungskontexte (wie z. B. die Familie) angemessen zu berücksichtigen. Da hierin eine wesentliche Ursache für die unbefriedigende Befundlage gesehen wird, bemüht sich der Beitrag darum, die Rolle des Sports für das Selbstkonzept im komplexen Wirkungsgeflecht verschiedener Entwicklungskontexte herauszuarbeiten. 121 Heranwachsende wurden in einer personorientierten Längsschnittsstudie untersucht und die Daten mit der LICUR-Methode (z. B. Bergman, Magnusson & El-Khouri, 2003 ) ausgewertet. Die dabei identifizierten Subgruppen unterscheiden sich in allen untersuchten Facetten des Selbstkonzepts bedeutsam, zeigen sowohl zeitstabile als auch dynamische Werteprofile ihrer Entwicklungsfaktoren und folgen überzufällig häufig einzelnen Entwicklungswegen. Aus diesen Befunden werden Konsequenzen für eine ganzheitliche und funktionale Selbstkonzeptförderung durch Sport abgeleitet.

In this study the Assessment Scale for Trainee Self-concept in the Portuguese Navy (ASTSC-PN) was adapted to the military context. The psychometric properties are presented and the results from the factor analysis displayed, which highlighted five significant dimensions: interpersonal relationships, competence, satisfaction, selfacceptance, and risk acceptance, with an item distribution coherent with the Teacher Self-concept Evaluation Scale (Veiga, Gonçalves, Caldeira, & Zuniga, 2006). The sample involved 149 trainees of the Training Course for Petty Officers 1st Class of the Portuguese Navy, ages ranging from 25 to 36, mostly of male gender. When studying external validity the scale factors appeared correlated, as expected, with other variables of commitment with training tasks, assessed with Assessment Scale for Trainee Engagement in the Portuguese Navy (ASTE-PN) and Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), and with other variables of learning motivation, assessed with Learning Motivation Scale (LMS). The results suggest that the adapted version presents good psychometric qualities, which makes it useful in research and intervention, in psychology and education within a military context.
