Abstract:Menaquinone (MK) or vitamin K2 is an important metabolite that controls the redox/energy status of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Although the major steps of MK biosynthesis have been delineated, the regulatory mechanisms of this pathway have not been adequately explored. Bashiri et al. now demonstrate that MenD, catalyzing the first committed step of MK production, is allosterically inhibited by a downstream cytosolic metabolite in the MK biosynthesis pathway.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
