Self-consistent ICRH modeling

Abstract: Self-consistent modelling of ICRH requires calculations of the wave field consistent with the distribution function of the resonant species. Because of the difference in time scales for wave propagation and the evolution of distribution functions this is commonly done by iterations. A robust code SELFO-light, suitable for routine calculations was recently developed, based on coupling a 1D time dependent Fokker-Planck code with the global wave solver LION using a FEM. Here the structure of an upgraded version o… Show more

“…Experiments of fusion product studies to enhance D-D reactions will have a profound effect on future fusion devices [1][2][3]. Based on harmonic Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies (ICRF) wave absorption mechanism and third harmonic ICRF heating in synergy with Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) heating experiments on their device, the third harmonic ICRF wave absorption will be more efficient with energetic seed ions generated by NBI [2,[4][5][6].…”

In addition to enhancing D(D, n) 3 H e fusion reactions in the deuterium plasmas, the synergy scenario also achieved a pretty spectacular result of activating the fishbone mode at Experimental Advanced Superconductivity Tokamak (EAST). Fishbones driven by fast particles generated by NBI and/or ion cyclotron resonance heating have been reported in fusion experiments at JET [7,8], ASDEX-U [9], DIII-D [10][11][12], EAST [13,14], HL-2A [15], etc.…”
