“…Self‐assessed masticatory ability is not objective, but it is considered an approximate index for evaluating the sequential and dynamic process of mastication. It has been used in large‐scale epidemiological studies because of its simplicity of administration, and it has been significantly related to a variety of measures of general health status among the elderly (18–21). The aim of present study is to elucidate associations between self‐assessed masticatory ability and higher brain function among community‐dwelling elderly persons utilising widely used neuropsychological tests after adjusting for background factors that include age, gender, educational background, social activity, drinking and smoking habits, chronic medical conditions and dental status.…”
