Applications of gold(i) alkynyl systems: a growing field to explore

Gold(I) alkynyl complexes present a growing research field with respect to their very wide range of applications in different areas such as luminescence, molecular recognition, optical switches, electronics and catalysis. Biological applications are also being developed in the recent years, where these complexes are used as therapeutic agents against different illnesses such as cancer cells or malaria. Related to luminescence, a general overview of the different states responsible for the observed emission is also included in this critical review. In some cases, the assignment is complicated due to the influence of the gold(I) atom and its capability to form metal···metal interactions (aurophilicity). Although an extensive discussion has been found in the literature related to the luminescent properties of these complexes, to the best of our knowledge there are not reports covering the span of their very interesting applications. The widespread research fields where this kind of complexes could present a key role is presented in this review (119 references).

In the multistep mechanism, the 4:2 complex undergoes a structural transition to a 3:2 complex [(L) 3 À(Zn 2+ ) 2 ] at the higher molar ratio, thereby resulting in dissociation of p stacking between the carbazole ligands.…”

This work demonstrates a selection criteria that determines whether molecular assembly occurs through a one-step or stepwise manner in ligand-bridged dinuclear zinc(II) (Zn(2+)) complex formation, which is associated with the π stacking of building blocks. The building blocks of carbazole ligands (L(1) and L(4)) that contain two imidazole moieties at the 3,6-positions form 4:2 complexes (i.e., [L]4-(Zn(2+))2) at a molar ratio of 0.50 ([Zn(2+)]/[L]0 = 0.50), thereby providing π stacking between the carbazole ligands. At the molar ratio of 0.67 ([Zn(2+)]/[L]0 = 0.67), the 4:2 complexes change to 3:2 complexes (i.e., [L]3-(Zn(2+))2) with no π-stacked carbazole unit. In contrast, when the imidazole groups in L(1) are replaced with benzoimidazole groups (L(3)), L(3) also yields the 4:2 complex [(L(3))4-(Zn(2+))2] at a molar ratio of 0.50. However, there is no structural transition from (L(3))4-(Zn(2+))2 to other complex species above a molar ratio of 0.50. Similarly, when two imidazole groups are introduced into the carbazole ring at 2,7-positions (L(5)), L(5) also gives the 4:2 complex [(L(5))4-(Zn(2+))2] that shows no structural transition to other complex species at a higher molar ratio.

A series of alkynyl gold(I) tri and tetratopic metallaligands of the type [Au 3 (CuC-R) 3 (μ 3 -triphosphane)] (R = 2,2'-bipyridin-5-yl or C 10 H 7 N 2 , 2,2':6',2''-terpyridin-4-yl or C 15 H 10 N 3 ; triphosphane = 1,1,1-tris(diphenylphosphanyl)ethane or triphos, 1,3,5-tris(diphenylphosphanyl)benzene or triphosph) and [Au 4 (CuC-R) 4 (μ 4 -tetraphosphane)] (R = C 10 H 7 N 2 , C 15 H 10 N 3 ; tetraphosphane = tetrakis(diphenylphosphanylmethyl)methane or tetraphos, 1,2,3,5-tetrakis(diphenylphosphanyl)benzene or tpbz, tetrakis(diphenylphosphaneylmethyl)-1,2-ethylenediamine or dppeda) were obtained in moderate to good yields. All complexes could be prepared by a reaction between the alkynyl gold(I) polymeric species [Au(CuC-R)] n and the appropriate polyphosphane. An alternative strategy that required the previous synthesis of the appropriate acetylacetonate precursors [Au n (acac) n (μ n -polyphosphane)] ("acac method") was assayed, nevertheless only the polyacac derivatives The photophysical properties of the synthesized compounds were carefully studied and used as a probe of their possible use as multidentate ligands for Cu(I) and Zn(II). The UV-Vis speciation studies of the complexation reactions were conducted via metal titration and, in most cases the dangling units of the ligand were found to behave in a fairy independent manner. While in the case of Cu(I) multiple equilibria exist in solution a single complex is detected for Zn(II) under the conditions studied.

Abstract: The reaction of the organogold metallaligand [(AuC[triple bond]Cbpyl)(2)(mu-Ph(2)P(CH(2))(4)PPh(2))] (bpyl = 2,2'-bipyridin-5-yl) with Fe(2+) or Zn(2+) ions gave helicates where the three ligand strands adopt a unique looped geometry.
