Self-assembly of a triply periodic continuous mesophase with Fddd symmetry in simple one-component liquids

Abstract: Triply periodic continuous morphologies (networks) arising as a result of the microphase separation in block copolymer melts have so far never been observed self-assembled in systems of particles with spherically symmetric interaction. We report a molecular dynamics simulation where two simple one-component liquids form upon cooling an equilibrium network with the Fddd space group symmetry. This complexity reduction in the liquid network formation in terms of the particle geometry and the number of components … Show more

“…In a recent theoretical investigation, it was shown that such Fddd mesophases could be stabilized even in single-component systems, in which case, the diffusivity of constituent particles was practically identical to that of the liquid phase. 75 These Fddd mesophases were shown to be stable at specific volume ratios between the different block copolymers or equivalently at a specific density for the single-component systems, 75 which by analogy lends weight to our hypothesis that steric considerations are the key parameter in the stability of γ-Na 3 PS 4 .…”

“…These systems are mesophasic, with properties in between solid and liquid, and exhibit remarkable mobility of their constituent atoms. In a recent theoretical investigation it was shown that such mesophases could be stabilized even in single-component systems in which case the diffusivity of constituent particles was practically identical to that of the liquid phase 77 . These mesophases were shown to be stable at specific volume ratios between the different block copolymers or, equivalently at a specific density for the single-component systems 77 ; which by analogy lends weight to our hypothesis that steric considerations are the key parameter in the stability of γ-Na3PS4.…”

“…Two adjacent zigzag arrays are joined to each other with a torsional angle φ. The relationship between the torsional angle φ and the lattice parameters is described by a / b = tan(φ/2). The torsional angle of Fddd phase formed by the trans -star copolymer was hence found to be 53°.…”
