Self‐Assembled Structure in Room‐Temperature Ionic Liquids

Abstract: Self-assembled vesicles, structurally equivalent to some hydrotropes, have been obtained from a Zn2+-fluorous surfactant or in the mixture of Zn2+-fluorous surfactant/zwitterionic surfactant in room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). The existence of bilayers arranged in vesicles in RTILs would be very exciting, open several new possibilities as reaction media, and increase our understanding of the physical and chemical factors for self-assembling systems in RTILs.

“…Both the hydrophobic interaction of alkyl chains and interactions between oppositely charged head groups played important roles for the gel formation. The self-assembled surfactant vesicles formed by the fluorous surfactant Zn(OOCCH 2 C 6 F 13 ) 2 or by mixtures of tetradecyldimethylamine oxide (C 14 DMAO) and Zn(OOCCH 2 C 6 F 13 ) 2 were reported by Hao's group (Hao et al, 2005). Tan et al (Tan et al, 2009) …”

“…Nowadays, ethylammonium butyrate with a value of 0.576 J m -3 is the solvent with the lowest Gordon parameter known to promote self-assembly of amphiphiles . The self-assembly is not restricted to protic ILs, it has been documented for several aprotic ILs as well (Anderson et al, 2003;Hao et al, 2005;Patrascu et al, 2006). In addition to the extensive amount of research conducted into binary IL/surfactant mixtures progress has been made in the formulation and characterization of nonaqueous microemulsions, the actual topic of this review.…”

“…Such aggregation behavior changes can be ascribed to the weaker solvophobic interactions of 12-2-12 in PAN and BAN. [65]. Well-defined self-assembled surfactant bilayer vesicles of Zn(OOCCH 2 C 6 F 13 ) 2 in bmimBF 4 were identified by negative-staining TEM.…”
