Self‐assembled monolayers of mercaptosuccinic acid on silver and gold surfaces designed for protein binding. Part I: structure of the monolayer

Abstract: Structure of the monolayers of mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) on silver and gold electrodes, grown from aqueous solution, has been studied using surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. It was found that MSA chemisorbs via both sulfur atom and one carboxylic group (more close to the sulfur atom) dissociated on the Ag and Au at natural pH (slightly acidic). The influence of the type of the substrate, pH of the solution and time of incubation of the thiol monolayer have been investigated. SERS results… Show more

“…The assignment of the Cc RR and SERRS bands is given in the Table 1. Appearance of the bands at 1492 ( 3 ), 1547 ( 11 ) and 1623 cm 1 10 suggests the native Fe 2C LS configuration. Surprisingly, besides the marker 4 mode at 1365 cm 1 characteristic for Fe 2C , we observe also the second component of the 10 mode at 1635 cm 1 , which indicates the Fe 3C oxidation state.…”

“…where "R" is a hydrocarbon linker). For example, 2-mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) [108,177,178] or mercaptoproprionic acid (MPA) [179] can be successfully used as a biocompatible coating for protein's or enzyme's adsorption / immobilization.…”

“…In two papers, Królikowska and Bukowska 15,16 studied SAMs of mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) on silver and gold surfaces designed for protein binding. It was found 15 that at natural pH, MSA chemisorbs via a sulfur atom and one dissociated carboxylic group on the Ag and Au surface. In the second paper, 16 an attempt was made to use MSA-modified electrodes as linkage monolayers for electrostatic and covalent binding of cytochrome C (Cc).…”
