Self-assembled bio-based coatings for flame-retardant and antibacterial polyester–cotton fabrics

Abstract: There are many defects in the post finishing flame-retardant modification of polyester–cotton (CT) fabric, leading to shortcomings such as single function and low flame-retardant efficiency, which still need to be solved urgently. Herein, a bio-based flame-retardant and antibacterial coating consisting of phytic acid and DL-arginine was deposited on CT fabrics using layer-by-layer assembly to obtain a flame-retardant and antibacterial CT fabric. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed that the assemb… Show more

“…Except for CS, PA can also chelate with the ammonium ions of DL through hydrogen bonds, and they were deposited on CB fabric using LBL assembly. The finishing CT fabric with 20 bilayers showed enhanced fire safety and an efficient inhibition diameter of 4.0 mm against S. aureus compared to the untreated CT fabric (0 mm) [ 51 ]. In addition, bio-based riboflavin sodium phosphate (vitamin B2, VB2) is an anionic phosphorus-containing compound that has been extensively used in disease treatment.…”

“…Polyester-cotton (PC) fabric featuring excellent characteristics of both polyester and cotton, e.g., breathable comfort, dimensional stability, smoothness and quick drying, and so forth, has been widely used in clothing and furniture decoration. , However, compared with pure polyester fabric or cotton fabric, PC fabric will form a special “scaffolding effect” in the combustion process, resulting in more intense combustion and greater fire risks. , Although the flame retardant treatment technology for polyester fabric and cotton fabric has been mature, higher requirements for flame retardants treated of PC fabric are needed because of their special structure and combustion process . Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a novel and effective flame retardant technology for PC fabric.…”

“…Therefore, based on the phosphoric acid structure of phytic acid from natural plants and the guanidine structure of DL-arginine from animals and plants [ 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 ], this paper prepared a biological flame retardant antibacterial agent (PADL) with a high phosphorus content and antibacterial structure. The bio-based composite sodium alginate fiber was prepared by wet spinning after blending and dispersing with alginate, and its structure and properties were characterized.…”
