Self-assembled antibacterial coating by N-halamine polyelectrolytes on a cellulose substrate

Abstract: In this research, two N-halamine polymer precursors, a cationic homopolymer poly((3-acrylamidopropyl)trimethylammonium chloride) (CHP) and an anionic homopolymer poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid sodium salt) (AHP), have been successfully synthesized and coated onto cotton fabrics via a layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition technique.

“…Cellulose acetate/NCC‐PMAM‐Cl films were challenged with Gram‐positive bacteria S. aureus (ATCC 6538) and Gram‐negative bacteria E. coli (ATCC 43895), following modified AATCC Test Method 100–1999. Pure CA film was used as control. The bacteria were cultivated 1 day before antibacterial testing.…”

“…PEM formation is achieved by consecutive treatment of a solid surface with oppositely charged polyelectrolytes. The building blocks of PEMs can range from small organic molecules to inorganic compounds and macromolecules including polysaccharides, proteins, viruses, DNA and various kinds of nanoparticles, showing a possible way for surface engineering to achieve desired properties . This ecofriendly technique can be enabled to control film structure and properties to realize successful PEM construction with tunable behaviors .…”

“…[ 4 ] The cross contamination of pathogenic microorganisms will cause both potential health risks and fi nancial burden. [ 3 ] Therefore, there is high demand for a rapid, environmentfriendly, and cost-effective fi nishing method to endow cotton fabrics with durable antibacterial and nonfouling properties.…”

“…[ 2 ] However, these absorbed secretions may provide nutrient sources for the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi. [ 3 ] Under specifi c conditions, these microorganisms will proliferate rapidly to form bacterial plaques/ biofi lms on surface of cotton fabrics, leading to unpleasant odor, stains, or discoloration, thus reducing the fabric mechanical strength and increasing cross contamination probability. [ 4 ] The cross contamination of pathogenic microorganisms will cause both potential health risks and fi nancial burden.…”
