Self-administered questionnaire compared with interview to assess past-year physical activity

Abstract: The agreement between the two modes of administration of the questionnaire suggests that the self-administered version of the MAQ is a valuable tool to assess past-year physical activity and inactivity in self-administered conditions. This instrument could be used in large-scale population studies investigating the relationships between physical activity and health outcomes.

“…Then, a post-trial observational study was established (SU.VI.MAX2; 2007 -2009), with an assessment of biological, clinical and lifestyle factors, such as physical activity, socioeconomic characteristics, health events and diet, through self-administered questionnaires. 25,26 The current analyses include only participants aged 45 -60 years at baseline, with at least three 24-h dietary records provided during the first 2 years of follow-up (1994 -1996) and no missing dietary, anthropometric or covariate data ( Figure 1). The first set of analyses assessed the association between dietary scores and 13-year weight change in 3151 subjects.…”

“…The questionnaire has been described in detail elsewhere. [30][31][32] Criterion validity of the modifiable activity questionnaire has been shown with a correlation coefficient of 0.56 (P ¼ 0.01, n ¼ 18 adults) between leisure activity from the questionnaire and total energy expenditure assessed by doubly labeled water. 32 Testretest correlations ranged from 0.63 to 0.92 for leisure activity in the first study by Kriska et al 33 Briefly, subjects were asked to report all leisure physical activities that were performed at least 10 times for 10 min per session over the past 12 months.…”

“…Leisure time physical activity (LTPA) was assessed with a French version (Vuillemin et al, 2000) of Kriskas's Modifiable Activity Questionnaire (MAQ) validated in adults (Kriska et al, 1990) and teenagers (Aaron et al, 1995). In 1999, the teenager MAQ was administered by a trained interviewer to evaluate the past-weeks and past-year's leisure time activity.…”
