Selenium status in preschool children receiving a Brazil nut–enriched diet

Abstract: The inclusion of Brazil nuts in school meals provided to children with already high dietary Se intakes increased Se levels and may result in an increased risk for toxicity. As selenosis is associated with some chronic diseases, we recommend continued monitoring of Se intake and status in this population.

“…Exposure to cadmium has been associated with decreased bone density [ 12 ]. The trace elements concentration in metabolically inactive fingernails has been used to monitoring the exposure to toxic metals [ 13 – 15 ] or to assess associations between excess or deficiency of trace elements and risk of cognitive decline in ageing [ 16 ], chronic kidney diseases [ 17 ], metabolic syndrome [ 18 ], inflammation [ 19 ], amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ 20 ], chronic depression [ 21 ], cancer risk [ 22 – 24 ], or cardiovascular diseases [ 25 ].…”

“…Selenium, as an essential micronutrient which is present in large quantities in Brazil nuts and has good bioavailability, supports physiological processes such as immune system modulation and thyroid hormone regulation. As an antioxidant, it protects the body against the harmful effects of free radicals and also prevents the accumulation of heavy metals 6,69 . Due to their wealth of nutritional and functional compounds, Brazil nuts and the oil obtained from them can be used to produce pharmaceuticals, foods, and skin care products 70,71 .…”

“…The kernel, the edible part of macadamia, contains more than 60 oil44 . The results of research carried out by Kaijser et al29 indicate varying oil content[69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78] in different varieties of macadamia nut. Macadamia oil, in addition to saturated fatty acids 13.2- 17.8 , contains polyunsaturated fatty acids 2.8-4.7 and large amounts of monounsaturated fatty acids…”

“…In an elegant clinical study Martens et al 4 compared selenium nutritional status of 41 preschool children in Macapa with 88 children from Belém, two cities in the Brazilian Amazon, a geographical region with seleniferous soils. Selenium intake was excessive in both preschool groups but was much greater in Macapa children (155.30 mg/d) whose school meals included Brazil nuts.…”
