Selenium-Related Transcriptional Regulation of Gene Expression

Abstract: Selenium is a trace metal essential to human health, and its deficiency has been related to, 11for instance, cardiovascular and myodegenerative diseases, infertility and osteochondropathy 12Kashin-Beck disease. It is incorporated as selenocysteine to selenoproteins, which protect against 13 reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. They also participate in the activation of thyroid hormone, 14and play a role in immune system functioning. The synthesis and incorporation of selenocysteine 15 occurs via a special mec… Show more

“…Moreover, it exhibits anti-inflammatory properties [ 41 ] and supports the progression of the cell cycle, making it essential for optimal immune response [ 42 ]. Selenium influences gene expression and cell growth by activating transcription factors [ 43 ]. The chemical form of selenium is an important factor influencing biological activity.…”

“…[143][144][145] Recent transcriptional analysis of mRNAs, miRNAs and lncRNAs, combined with proteomic data from patients with KBD and Keshan disease, has revealed novel cellular pathways that may be related to selenium-related regulation of transcription. 146 A rat model of KBD was established by…”

“…High-level expression of GPX4 can reduce the level of cell death by inhibiting ferroptosis. Selenocysteine peptide (Tat, SelPep) can also promote cell survival by inhibiting ferroptosis [ 62 ]. Auroral kinase A (AURKA) was significantly overexpressed in upper gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma (UGC), in which the methylation level of several CpG nucleotides upstream of miR-4715-3p increased.…”
