Selectivity and Stability Enhancement of Iron Oxide Catalyst by Ceria Incorporation for Selective Oxidation of H2S to Sulfur

Abstract: Cerium incorporated iron oxide catalysts and a pure iron oxide catalytic material were prepared by the complexation technique and their catalytic performances were investigated for selective oxidation of H2S to elemental sulfur in a fixed-bed flow reactor. Ce−Fe mixed oxide catalyst having a Fe/Ce ratio of 1/1 (2Fe−2Ce) showed complete conversion and very high sulfur selectivity in the temperature range of 200−300 °C. Sulfur selectivity and stability of iron oxide catalyst was significantly enhanced by the inc… Show more

“…Conversely, sulfur selectivity increases from 94% to 98%. As we known, the FeS 2 formation is one of the main reasons for iron oxide based catalysts deactivation [3,6]. Besides, FeS 2 is the active site for oxidizing H 2 S to SO 2 [34][35][36], which is contradict with our results.…”

“…However, its sulfur selectivity is quite low due to the excess oxygen requirement. Recently, a number of methods have been established to modify iron oxide catalysts to obtain more selective and stable catalysts, particularly by incorporating a second metal element into the iron oxide structure [7][8][9][10][11] activity and stability at a relatively higher GHSV and a lower reaction temperature.…”

“…Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) gas is a major source of impurity in a gasification process of fossil fuels and found in many tail-gas streams of biogas plant, syngas production plant, and petrochemical plant [1,2]. H 2 S gas is highly corrosive, toxic, and odorous in nature.…”
