Selective Synthesis, Characterization and Kinetics Studies of poly(α-Methyl styrene) induced by Maghnite-Na+ Clay (Algerian MMT)

Abstract: A new and efficient catalyst of Na-Montmorillonite (Na + -MMT) was employed in this paper for α-methylstyrene (AMS) cationic polymerization. Maghnite clay, obtained from Tlemcen Algeria, was investigated to remove heavy metal ion from wastewater. "Maghnite-Na" is a Montmorillonite sheet silicate clay, exchanged with sodium as an efficient catalyst for cationic polymerization of many vinylic and heterocyclic monomers. The various techniques, including 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, IR, DSC and Ubbelohde viscometer, were us… Show more

“…The novelty of this work is to study the synthesis of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate using a green and recyclable catalyst (Maghnite-H + ), and to study its polymerization initiated directly by Algerian montmorillonite clay (Maghnite-Na + ). This new eco-catalyst has been used successfully to prepare and study several kinds of polymers [35][36][37]. First, we have synthesized the monomer ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDM) by the condensation of ethylene glycol with methacrylic anhydride in bulk; and subsequently the polymerization of the obtained monomer was carried out under suitable and mild conditions.…”

“…4). According to the work published by Yahiaoui et al [38], 1 H NMR spectroscopy at 300 MHz (Solvent CDCl 3 ) ( Fig. 4) showed different peaks: (a) the methylene groups (CH 2 -) at 2.6 ppm and (b) the methylene (CH 2 O-) at 3.7 ppm.…”

“…The advantage of this new method of polymerization is also the use of a catalyst that promotes the synthesis reaction called Maghnite-Na + [19,20]. It is easily available, green, non-toxic, inflammable and inexpensive because it can be separated from the system by simple filtration and reused in other reactions [21,22]. Unlike natural clay minerals Maghnite-Na + has high crystallinity, controllable composition and fewer impurities [23].…”
