Selective Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Ethane and Propane over Copper‐Containing Mordenite: Insights into Reaction Mechanism and Product Protection

Mikalai A. Artsiusheuski,
René Verel,
Jeroen A. van Bokhoven
et al.

Abstract: Copper(II)‐containing mordenite (CuMOR) is capable of activation of C−H bonds in C1‐C3 alkanes, albeit there are remarkable differences between the functionalization of ethane and propane compared to methane. The reaction of ethane and propane with CuMOR results in the formation of ethylene and propylene, while the reaction of methane predominantly yields methanol and dimethyl ether. By combining in situ FTIR and MAS NMR spectroscopies as well as time‐resolved Cu K‐edge X‐ray absorption spectroscopy, the react… Show more

“…Propylene is a key raw material for the production of a wide range of chemical products and is traditionally obtained from steam cracking and fluidized catalytic cracking. , However, hydraulic fracturing, especially in North America, has led to large-scale extraction of shale gases, making light alkanes such as propane increasingly economical. This shift has significantly highlighted propane dehydrogenation (PDH) technologies in the industry.…”

“…Cu K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy is an ideal technique to probe the composition of the Cu cocatalyst. The elemental specificity of X-ray absorption allows for selective probing of Cu in the multicomponent p-GaN/Al 2 O 3 /Au/Cu system. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) region of the Cu K-edge absorption spectrum is highly sensitive to both the oxidation state and coordination environment of Cu. , The method can also be applied under operating conditions, for example, under CO 2 and H 2 O vapor atmosphere and under visible light illumination, which is relevant here when characterizing the Cu cocatalyst composition in p-GaN/Al 2 O 3 /Au/Cu.…”
