Selective Ion Exchange Governed by the Irving–Williams Series in K2Zn3[Fe(CN)6]2 Nanoparticles: Toward a Designer Prodrug for Wilson’s Disease

Abstract: The principle of the Irving-Williams series is applied to the design of a novel prodrug based on K2Zn3[Fe(CN)6]2 nanoparticles (ZnPB NPs) for Wilson's disease (WD), a rare but fatal genetic disorder characterized by the accumulation of excess copper in the liver and other vital organs. The predetermined ion-exchange reaction rather than chelation between ZnPB NPs and copper ions leads to high selectivity of such NPs for copper in the presence of the other endogenous metal ions. Furthermore, ZnPB NPs are highly… Show more

“…Specifically, we notice that the stability of the synthesized MHCFs compounds are all controlled by their atomic radius and followed the order of Mn 2+ < Fe 2+ < Co 2+ < Ni 2+ < Cu 2+ . [ 38 ] The solubility of MnHCF ( K sp = 1.9 × 10 −3 ) is much higher than most of other MHCFs. Therefore, MnHCF can be rationally selected as a self‐sacrificial template to form other structures.…”

“…[ 35–37 ] Notably, according to Irving−Williams stability series, we noticed that the relative stability of homologous bivalent 3d metal complexes will follow the trend: Cr 2+ <Mn 2+ <Fe 2+ <Co 2+ <Ni 2+ <Cu 2+ >Zn 2+ , regardless of the structure and properties of organic ligands. [ 38 ] The TCPP‐Fe organic ligands were encapsulated in open cavities of ZIFs, and the structure would not be damaged by low‐temperature thermal treatment. Then, TCPP‐Fe/Cu bimetallic catalytic active sites were constructed by adding Cu 2+ to replace other transition metal ions (such as unquantified Co 2+ ) in the carboxyl group of TCPP‐Fe.…”

“…5,9-11 A focus will be given here to demonstrate how the PSM approach could be used to tailor and bring additional tools for such targeted applications. In a nutshell, the efficiency of nanosized PB has been demonstrated for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), 140,149,150,161,190,202,203,[225][226][227][228][229][230] scintigraphy, 218 photo-acoustic imaging, 231,232 therapy through different kinds of treatment 233,234 including drug delivery 211,[233][234][235][236] and photothermal therapy. 190,215,220,229,[237][238][239][240][241][242] For the latter, high absorption of PB in the Near InfraRed (NIR) spectral domain (650-900 nm) and high light-to-heat conversion efficiency have been explored for the design of potential laser-assisted photothermal ablation agents for cancer therapy, which could also concomitantly trigger the drug delivery.…”
