Selective Hydration of Nitriles to Amides Over Titania Supported Palladium Exchanged Vanadium Incorporated Molybdophosphoric Acid Catalysts

Transition metal catalyzed hydration of nitriles is an attractive methodology for amide synthesis, and hence recently attracted wide attention. It is one of the significant organic transformations as amides play a vital role in biological, pharmaceutical and industrial applications. In this work, we report the synthesis of a new solid supported Ru (III) Schiff base complex, Ru@imine-nanoSiO 2 immobilized on nanosilica obtained from rice husk. The complex was characterized by FTIR, powder X-ray diffraction, BET surface area measurement, UV-vis, SEM-EDX, TEM, ESR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ICP-AES analysis. Using Ru@imine-nanoSiO 2 as the catalyst, the hydration of nitriles in i-PrOH at 40°C was studied which resulted in good isolated yields (60-99%). The catalyst can be recycled and reused up to 5 th cycle without any loss in activity. The products were characterized by FTIR, GC-MS and 1 H-NMR spectroscopy and compared with authentic samples.

There has been much progress on mononuclear chromium(III) complexes featuring luminescence and photoredox activity, but dinuclear chromium(III) complexes have remained underexplored in these contexts until now. We identified a tridentate chelate ligand able to accommodate both meridional and facial coordination of chromium(III), to either access a mono‐ or a dinuclear chromium(III) complex depending on reaction conditions. This chelate ligand causes tetragonally distorted primary coordination spheres around chromium(III) in both complexes, entailing comparatively short excited‐state lifetimes in the range of 400 to 800 ns in solution at room temperature and making photoluminescence essentially oxygen insensitive. The two chromium(III) ions in the dimer experience ferromagnetic exchange interactions that result in a high spin (S = 3) ground state with a coupling constant of +9.3 cm‐1. Photoinduced energy transfer from the luminescent ferromagnetically coupled dimer to an anthracene derivative results in sensitized triplet‐triplet annihilation upconversion. Based on these proof‐of‐principle studies, dinuclear chromium(III) complexes seem attractive for the development of fundamentally new types of photophysics and photochemistry enabled by magnetic exchange interactions.

Multicycle Testing of P‐Mo–V Heteropoly Acid Catalysts in Oxidation of Substituted Phenols

A series of valuable para‐quinones, such as 2,3‐ and 2,6‐dimethyl‐1,4‐benzoquinones (Me2BQs), were synthesized via oxidation of the corresponding 2,3‐ and 2,6‐dimethylphenols by using homogeneous high‐vanadium solutions of heteropoly acids: H11P3Mo18V8’O87 (HPA‐8’) and H17P3Mo16V10’O89 (HPA‐10’). These catalysts were shown to be capable of interdependent and reversible change of their acid and oxidative properties, the efficient regeneration of which can be performed for 25 min. The complete optimization of reaction conditions allowed one to reach the selectivity of the desired Me2BQs in 95–97% and shorten the oxidation time. The structural integrity of heteropoly anions present in the catalyst solutions was found to persist during the repeated performing substrate oxidation and catalyst regeneration. The catalysts showed the preservation of stability and efficiency for 25 cycles, demonstrating the prospectivity of high‐vanadium heteropoly acids in oxidation of organic substances.
