Selective Grass Control with Siduron

Abstract: Doses of 1-(2-methylcyclohexyl)-3-phenylurea (siduron), sprayed on seeds of several forage, turf, and weed grasses on the soil surface killed some weed grasses without injuring many desirable grasses. Seeds of tolerant grasses mixed with an excess of a dry siduron formulation and stored for 12 months germinated without injury, but crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis (L) Scop.) and barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crusgalli (L.)) were killed during germination. Siduron eliminated seedling weed grasses from seedling pere… Show more

“…The authors wish to note that Sherman et al (1980) is an exception to the majority of other reports. Excellent safety on tall fescue, kentucky bluegrass, creeping bentgrass, and other cool-season turfgrass species following siduron at seeding applications has been previously reported (Kerr, 1969;Moshier et al, 1976). Further, excellent bromoxynil safety has been reported on established 'Tifway' bermudagrass, centipedegrass, st. augustinegrass, and seashore paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum Swartz), as well as seedling bermudagrass (Askew et al, 2004;Havlak et al, 2003;Lawson et al, 2002;Unruh et al, 2002).…”

“…Quinclorac has been reported to delay kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) cover up to 16 weeks when applied at seeding, however no visual injury to the kentucky bluegrass was reported (Reicher et al, 1999). Siduron has been reported to be safe on tall fescue, kentucky bluegrass, creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.), and other cool-season turfgrass species when applied at seeding (Kerr 1969;Moshier et al, 1976).…”

“…Grasses were hw,,ested lovegrass (E. trichodes (Nutt.) Wood] seedlings by 50% (Kerr, 1969). In contrast to bensulide and siduron, the application of butylate, chlorsulfuron, metsulfuron, and MSMA resulted in no species-herbicide combination where all seedlings were killed (Tables 4 and 5).…”

“…If left untreated, spring seedings can fail due to competition from undesirable species. Siduron has been the industry standard, due to its safety (low level of herbicide injury) to seedlings of cool‐season grasses and adequate control of warm‐season summer annual grassy weeds (16,20,23). However, siduron only has short‐term residual control and requires repeat applications for season‐long control (21).…”

“…Aminocyclopyrachlor was labeled for applications at any time during seeding and establishment of cool‐season grasses, but was removed from the market in 2011 (3). Though siduron or quinclorac have been extensively evaluated for use during establishment of KBG or TF, (13,14,16,19,20,21,22,23,25), the effect of application strategies on weed control and seedling safety of the newer herbicides carfentrazone, aminocyclopyrachlor, and mesotrione is not well documented.…”
