Serum muramidase may be considered a rough index of leukopoiesis both in the normal state [1,2,3,4] and in proliferative diseases involving myeloid and monocytic cells [5,6,7,8], Since the blood of the neonate differs from that of the normal adult in certain metabolic pathways and in the variability of its white cell population, serum muramidase was investigated in this age group.
Method and M aterialScrum muramidase activity was measured by a modified turbidimctric method of Sm o lelis and H a r t s e l l [9,10], Point two ml aliquots of serum were added to 2 ml of standard egg-white muramidase substrate. The changes in optical density were measured in duplicate at 30-second intervals for 2 min in a Coleman spectrophotometer.
