Selection of Metal Oxides for Removing SO2 From Flue Gas

Abstract: From these studies, it can be concluded that cocurrent contacting of vapor and liquid streams is a very satisfactory method to utilize for the design of a multistage vapor-liquid equilibrium unit.A contactor, six in. in length, with an annular space of %or %-in., packed with Metex screen, will be 100% efficient at throughputs up to 1000 grams per hr per cm2, which corresponds, respectively, to 6 and 28 liters of liquid per hr.

“…Better SO 2 resistance of perovskite is obtained when Co is replaced by an element with lower heat of decomposition of the formed sulfate species. According to Ostroff et al (19), strontium sulfate decomposes directly to the oxides at temperatures above 1647 K (others indicate (20)(21)(22) 1073, 1473 and 1873 K). Trivalent metal sulfates will decompose at lower temperatures than divalent metal sulfates.…”

“…According to Figure 3, the former value was selected because it represents the O 2 partial pressure in atmospheric pressure, and the latter value was selected according to Ref. [22]. As the O 2 partial pressure decreases, the regions of sulfur dioxide stability expand while those of the sulfide and sulfate diminish.…”
