Companies use ERP systems to automate business processes in order to increase productivity, reduce costs, and meet customer requirements. ERP selection for an enterprise is a decision-making project that is both risky and expensive, a wrong selection of this system or project partners can lead to the failure of the ERP implementation project. In this paper, we combined the theoretical findings of ERP selection issue with expert's practical recommendations to determine the critical decisions that need to be made in the pre-implementation phase. Then we presented a methodology to determine ERP selection criteria based on the critical decisions analysis. A part of this work was performed within a company that has just launched an ERP implementation project.

There are many benefits offered by integrated enterprise computer systems. There are a growing number of options available to obtain such management information system support. A major problem when selecting Enterprise Information Systems, in special ERP systems, is how to deal with the great diversity of options as well as the number of criteria used to evaluate each alternative. There is an implicit tradeoff between cost and system functionality. Total cost of ownership (TCO) is in itself very difficult to calculate accurately, and needs to be considered in light of other criteria. Published criteria for ERP selection decisions in a variety of contexts are reviewed. We also present a method which integrates a multicriteria rating strategy based on the Simple MultiAttribute Rating Theory (SMART) with the meta-method Prepare-Identify-Rate-Compare-Select (PIRCS) framework for driving the selection process. The method is demonstrated with a general ERP selection decision, but is meant as a framework that can be applied with whatever criteria decision makers deem important in the context of their specific decision.

A successful implementation of an ERP project in an organization requires the selection of a suitable ERP system. Indeed, the selection of an ERP system has a significant effect on future operations and profitability of the enterprise.Many research works identified major factors influencing the selection of an ERP in SMEs, and proposed criteria and methods related to the optimization of the selection process.Several ERPs selecting methods use AHP, on one hand in order to determine the weight of the criteria, and on the other hand to evaluate ERP systems. Some methods use only AHP, where other methods use a combination of AHP with other Multi decision criteria Methods (hybrid methods).The first objective of this paper is to present a review of literature on ERP selection process: after describing the methods used to select the ERP systems, the criteria list that companies use to select their ERP systems is presented.The second objective is to propose a detailed example of using the AHP method in an ERP selection context, a step-bystep application of AHP will be demonstrated.
