Selection of condition monitoring techniques using discrete probability distributions: A case study

Abstract: The setting up of a condition monitoring program is considered a strategic decision owing to its influence on cost, safety, quality, and availability in an industrial plant. However, no previous structured analysis of the selection of condition monitoring techniques and their characteristics has been made, so further analysis is needed. This paper proposes a model for the selection of the most suitable condition monitoring technique to be set up in a subsidiary of a petrochemical plant. For this purpose, diffe… Show more

“…There is a need for a common methodology that incorporates cost as well as other factors while selecting CM techniques. (Buckley, 1987;Carnero, 2009;Liu et al, 2016;Mechefske & Wang, 2001;Moore & Baker, 1969;Parsaei & Wilhelm, 1989;Petkov et al, 2020;Utne et al, 2012;Wang & Wang, 2013) Toliyat, 2004) This paper proposes a methodology for more effective implementation of CM techniques for industrial applications. A complete solution considering motor as well as load side fault situations is suggested.…”

“…Each company is characterized using four scenario variables: typology of critical machinery in the industrial plant, technological level of the productive process in the industrial plant, number of critical machines in the industrial plant, and future behaviour of the company. Carnero [39] also chooses the condition monitoring technique to be applied, but using a multicriteria utility function and analytic hierarchy process. Discrete probability distributions are obtained for each alternative and a Monte Carlo simulation is used to calculate the final utility of the alternatives.…”
