BACKGROUNDTo improve integrated pest management (IPM) performance it is essential to assess pesticide side effects on host plants, insect pests, and natural enemies. The green peach aphid (Myzus persicae Sulzer) is a major insect pest that attacks various crops. Aphidius gifuensis is an essential natural enemy of M. persicae that has been applied effectively in controlling M. persicae. Thiamethoxam is a neonicotinoid pesticide widely used against insect pests.RESULTSThe current study showed the effect of thiamethoxam against S. tuberosum, M. persicae, and A. gefiuensis and the physiological and molecular response of the plants, aphids, and parasitoids after thiamethoxam application. Thiamethoxam affected the physical parameters of S. tuberosum and generated a variety of sublethal effects on M. persicae and A. gefiuensis, including nymph development time, adult longevity, and fertility. Our results showed that different thiamethoxam concentrations (0.1, 0.5, and 0.9 μm a.i/L) on different time durations (2, 6, and 10 days) increased the antioxidant enzyme activities SOD, POD, and CAT of S. tuberosum, M. persicae, and A. gefiuensis significantly compared to the control. Our results also showed that different thiamethoxam concentrations (0.1, 0.5, and 0.9 μm a.i/L) on different time durations (2, 6, and 10 days) increased the expression of SOD, POD, CAT, AChE, CaRE, and GST genes of S. tuberosum, M. persicae, and A. gefiuensis compared to the control.CONCLUSIONOur findings reveal that using thiamethoxam at suitable concentrations and time durations for host plants and natural enemies may enhance natural control through the conservation of natural enemies by overcoming any fitness disadvantages.This article is protected by copyright. Introduction:Spodoptera frugiperda is an important nomadic agricultural pest with a diverse host range and resistance against several insecticides. The current study investigated the life history traits of two strains of the field-collected population against chlorantraniliprole using an age-stage two-sex life table.Method: For this, we established the chlorantraniliprole-susceptible (Crp-SUS G12), and chlorantraniliprole-reduced susceptible (Crp-RES G12) strains derived from the sixth generation of the QJ-20 population having a resistance ratio (RR) of 10.39-fold, compared with the reported susceptible population.Results: The results showed that the chlorantraniliprole-reduced susceptible strain attained a 4.0-fold RR, while the chlorantraniliprole-susceptible strain attained an RR of 0.85-fold, having overlapped fiducial limits (FLs) with the referred susceptible baseline. Meanwhile, the present study revealed that the development time of the susceptible strain was significantly longer than that of the reduced susceptible strain. Similarly, the mean longevity, adult pre-oviposition period (APOP), and total pre-oviposition period (TPOP) of the female chlorantraniliprole-susceptible strain were considerably longer than those of the female chlorantraniliprole-reduced susceptible strain. Contrarily, the population parameters, including the intrinsic rate of increase (r), finite rate of increase (λ), and net reproductive rate (R), of the chlorantraniliprole-susceptible strain were considerably lower than those of the chlorantraniliprole-reduced susceptible strain, while the mean generation time (T) of the chlorantraniliprole-susceptible strain was substantially longer than the chlorantraniliprole-reduced susceptible strain. The age-stage characteristic survival rate (sxj) and age-stage characteristic life expectancy (exj) of the chlorantraniliprole-susceptible strain were longer than those of the chlorantraniliprole-reduced susceptible strain, but the age-stage-specific reproductive value (vxj) of the chlorantraniliprole-susceptible strain was shorter than that of the chlorantraniliprole-reduced susceptible strain. Moreover, the contents of vitellogenin (Vg) and VgR in the chlorantraniliprole-reduced susceptible strain were higher than those in the chlorantraniliprole-susceptible strain.Discussion: These findings showed that reducing susceptibility to chlorantraniliprole promoted population growth in S. frugiperda. Therefore, this study could provide conceptual support for the integrated pest management (IPM) approach to control S. frugiperda in the field.

Cyantraniliprole belongs to new chemical class of diamides and used Plutella xylostella one of the highly devastating lepidopteran insect pests of cole crops has been found to develop resistance to cyantraniliprole worldwide including India . However their mechanism of resistance is not examined in Indian scenario. Hence a survey was conducted to analyse the current resistance status of field population of P. xylostella to cyantraniliprole. The maximum lethal concentration expressed by field population in Tamil Nadu was 19.81 ppm which had higher ratio (2828.57) of resistance to that of susceptible population. The enzyme analysis revealed the over expression of GST up to at 24 hr after exposure (HAE) and MFO up to 48 hr upon exposure. Further the synergistic study stated that PBO and DEM could increase the toxicity of cyantraniliprole to some extent.
