Potassium and sulfur are among the most important nutrients limiting sesame production. EthioSIS soil testing map indicate that nutrients such as K and S are deficient in the study site. Study was carried out to investigate response of sesame to K and S application at Humera Agricultural Research Center, Kafta Humera district, Tigray, Ethiopia in 2016 main cropping season. Treatments consisted four levels of potassium (0, 20, 40 and 60 kg K2O ha-1 as KCl) and four levels of sulfur (0, 20, 40 and 60 kg ha-1 as CaSO4.2H2O). The experiment was laid out as Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) in factorial arrangement with three replications using Setit-1 sesame variety. Soil sample was taken, result of soil analysis revealed that the soil was clayey textural class, neutral in soil reaction (pH = 7.35), low organic matter content (0.73%), very low total N (0.03 %) and very low available P (0.74 mg kg-1), high soil cation exchange capacity (CEC) (40 cmol(+) kg-1), medium exchangeable K (0.26 cmol(+) kg-1) and low extractable sulfur (4.78 mg kg-1). Maximum sesame grain yields (1371.67 kg ha-1) was obtained from plot treated with 20 kg K2O ha-1 + 40 kg S ha-1 which resulted 145.3% increase over the control plot`s yield. From plots fertilized with K and S levels at a rate of 20 kg K ha-1 and 40 kg S ha-1 was obtained higher yield of sesame. It is conclude, therefore, it will be good to promote K and S for further demonstration.

Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), the Queen of oilseeds, is infected with different pathogens, restricting its yield. Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. sesami is the most destructive disease of sesame worldwide, causing economic losses. This work aimed to develop new high-yielding strains, resistant and/or tolerant to Fusarium. Two cycles of pedigree selection were achieved under infection of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. sesami. Two populations in the F2 (600 plants each) were used. The selection criteria were five single traits and another three restricted by yield. The restricted selection was better in preserving variability than the single trait selection. The observed genetic gain in percentage from the mid-parent in the F4-generation was significant for the eight selection criteria. Single trait selection proved to be an effective method for improving the selection criterion, but it caused deleterious effects on the other correlated traits in most cases. The seed yield increased by 30.67% and 20.31% from the better parent in the first and second populations, respectively. The infection% was significantly reduced by 24.04% in the first, and 9.3% in the second, population. The selection index improved seed yield, and its attributes can be recommended.

El ajonjolí es una planta importante en la producción de aceite comestible de alta calidad por su gran valor nutricional y terapéutico. La caracterización de accesiones es necesaria para la identificación de parentales con características de interés para la obtención de nuevos materiales genéticos. Se caracterizaron 160 accesiones de ajonjolí en el Centro de Investigación Nataima, municipio de El Espinal (Tolima), manejadas por el Sistema de Bancos de Germoplasma de la Nación para la Alimentación y la Agricultura, de las cuales, 136 fueron colectadas en 25 países. La caracterización incluyó 81 descriptores: 30 cuantitativos y 51 cualitativos. Se examinaron factores para datos mixtos y se generaron grupos homogéneos mediante análisis de conglomerados para cinco grupos de variables: planta y plántula, tallo y raíz, hoja, semilla y cápsula y flor. Se seleccionaron 25 variables discriminantes de las estructuras anteriores y se realizó un nuevo análisis de conglomerados que generó cinco agrupaciones principales influenciadas por las variables cualitativas: tipo y hábito de crecimiento, color del tallo, forma de la hoja, tipo de ramificación, color interno de la corola, posición de las cápsulas y color de la semilla, y cuantitativas: altura, longitud de internudos, número de ramas principales y secundarias, número de cápsulas por nudo, número de cápsulas por planta, número de semillas por cápsula, peso de 1000 semillas y rendimiento. La estructura de la agrupación no presentó influencia por la procedencia de las accesiones. Las accesiones TEHUANTEPEC SELEC, L-AJ-M-67, L-AJ-M-51, PARDO PELUDO, BLANCO CRIOLLO, NP-61, BACO, INSTITUTO 104, CHINO ROJO, R 198 y ACARIGUA presentaron características de interés que diferencian los grupos formados. Las variables discriminantes y los materiales identificados permiten la generación de variedades para futuros programas de mejoramiento en Colombia.
