Selecting an appropriate alternative for a major infrastructure project with regard to value engineering approach

Abstract: Purpose Road construction projects are one of the strategic industries in each country and their construction and development requires spending huge funds. Regarding the increased demand and resource constraints; a technique which reduces costs by maintaining and improving the functioning is of great importance for the authorities of each country. Value engineering is a comprehensive and coherent means based on innovation and team work which, in addition to maintaining the quality and improving the project fun… Show more

“…The findings further support the argument made in the literature, i.e. VM has received a higher demand in the construction industry compared to the other industries to achieve the best value for the client (Mousakhani et al , 2017). Apart from these two publications, all the other eight publications are review-oriented articles related to VM in different projects.…”

“…It can be successfully applied worldwide in all types of construction including buildings, offshore oil/gas platforms (Perera et al , 2006) and also in product manufacturing industries (Leber et al , 2014). The applications of this technique in the construction industry have expanded rapidly (Shen and Yu, 2012), and VM is currently in high demand (Mousakhani et al , 2017). This is not surprising, given the higher demands for better “value for money” that accompany increasing aspirations of clients and end-users.…”

“…VE was also used for a major infrastructure project to obtain an appropriate alternative in [37]. Improvement of the function-cost ratio (value-cost ratio) is usually obtained using mathematical optimization of output parameters as the functions of the inputs for components of engineering systems.…”

“…In general, by using value engineering in a project, three advantages, including design review, quality control (QC) and cost saving will be obtained. Limited studies on value engineering in development projects have been carried out since the late 1980s among which Brahma [1], Liew [2], Naderpajouh and Afshar [3], Mao et al [4], Lee et al [5], Khademi and Beheshti [6], Tang and Bittner [7], Katzenbach et al [8], Zetterlund et al [9], Khezeli and Rahai [10], Heralova [11], Mousakhani et al [12] and Taromi et al [13] can be addressed. Tang and Bittner [7] studied using V.E.…”
