Abstract:The study was conducted to investigate the iron (Fe) contamination in groundwater at Tangail municipality during the period from January to June 2011. Groundwater samples were collected from 18 locations, where 15 were tube-wells, 2 deep tubewells and 1 pump. The result of the study showed that the highest level of Fe (24.50 mg/l) was found at Dewla north, while the lowest level (1.03 mg/l) was recorded from Bepari para. The highest and lowest amount of Fe was found in ward 1 and 4, respectively. The results were compared with the Bangladesh drinking water quality standards as well as with the international standards. In Bangladesh, permissible limit of Fe is 0.3-1.0 mg/l, whereas WHO standard level is 0.3 mg/l. All the samples were exceeded the standard levels of Fe, whereas ward 1, 2 and 7 were worstly affected. The study also reveal that the availability of Fe does not depend on the type of water sources, but it depends on the aquifers or water table. If the aquifer contains Fe, then the tube-well water will contain Fe or vice versa. These higher Fe concentrations found in the study area may be harmful for those families who are consuming the water from these sources on regular basis. Thus, to overcome this problem the consumers should not drink these higher amounts of Fe, and they should find other sources or replace the tube-well or treat the water before drinking and other domestic and household purposes.

Ecological and Geochemical Features of Manganese Distribution in Groundwaters of Ukraine

The results of hydrogeochemical studies on the identification of the features of manganese distribution in drinking groundwater of conditionally clean and technologically polluted territories of Ukraine are presented, as well as the assessment of the influence of inorganic ligands characteristic of the investigated groundwater on the behavior of Mn2+ depending on the initial conditions of the water environment. The Kyiv city, as well as Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia, and Rivne regions were selected as conditionally clean territories; Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions — as technologically polluted territories. According to domestic and foreign literary data, the range of medical, biological, and toxicological properties of manganese is outlined, and the key features of the element prevalence in natural aqueous solutions and underground waters are clarified. Manganese and ferrum concentrations in the samples of the studied groundwater were determined using the high-precision method of mass spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS). As a result of the statistical processing of the studied samples, it was established that the median manganese content for most of the examined territories does not exceed the maximum permissible concentration. The exception is the underground water of the Pidhirtsi village (Kyiv region), where the concentration of the element exceeds the standard by almost 4 times. A comparative analysis to determine the relationship between the manganese and ferrum concentrations and the depth of water intake structures did not show any regularities characteristic of natural waters undisturbed by technogenic activity. It was revealed that the largest deviations from the background values for manganese are typical for the Dnipropetrovsk region, and for ferrum — for the Kyiv city. Statistically significant relationships between the concentrations of manganese and ferrum in the examined samples were not found, which indicates the different geochemical nature of the elements concentration processes in the studied groundwater. Using the specialized software tools Hydra and Medusa, the finding forms of manganese depending on the pH of the water environment in studied samples were calculated. The obtained ratios of the element soluble forms for conditionally clean and technologically polluted territories of Ukraine made it possible to establish that in the water of conditionally clean territories, manganese migrates mainly in the form of free Mn2+ ion, and to a much lesser extent (11%) in the form of MnSO4. On the other hand, within the technologically polluted territories, the key role belongs to the inorganic ligand SO42–, the ratio of soluble compounds MnSO4 and Mn2+ is, respectively, 56% to 44%. The obtained results can serve as a basis for the selection of criteria when performing biogeochemical zoning of the territory of Ukraine.

Underground tube-well water is one of the most important sources of pure drinking water in the world.Drinking water contamination with heavy metals (iron and arsenic) is a burning question nowadays for public health and also environmental perspectives. Our present task is for determination of iron and arsenic concentration in ground tube-well with possible health risk in Bangladesh. The water samples were collected from Tangail district of Bangladesh during January 2017. Iron and arsenic concentration were analyzed by using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Iron concentration ranged from 4.483 to 20.698 mg/l where arsenic concentration was obtained from <0.001 to 0.01969 mg/l in the studied samples. Arsenic concentration for most of the samples and all iron samples were higher than the maximum permissible level of World Health Organization due to drinking these water. Iron is a heavy metal may cause serious health risk to study area people. In Bangladesh, permissible limit of iron is 0.3-1.0 mg/l, whereas WHO standard level is 0.3 mg/l. All the samples were exceeded the standard levels of iron. A range of 20 to 60 times higher iron concentration reported than permissible limits in tube-well water of the study area. These higher iron concentrations found in the study area may be harmful to those people who are consuming the water from these sources on regular basis and they may pose a high health risk. Thus, to overcome this problem, the consumers should not drink groundwater containing higher amounts of iron, and they should find other sources or replace the tube-well or treat the water for drinking and other domestic and household purposes.
